Shinbashi Yakiniku | Logan Road, Underwood | 7.5

There is little doubt that chicken soup is highly nourishing. However, it is even more so when it comes with your dinner, and is free-flowing!

It was the night of my mother’s birthday, something special was requested. After much umming and ahhing (for most options around the Logan area has been long expended) we set out in a non-committing manner. Fortune favours the bold, and we stumbled across Shinbashi Yakiniku. I do enjoy a good Asian barbeque, and I was not disappointed.

First impressions ticked the boxes- no offensive smell. The major problem with yakiniku or Korean BBQ restaurants is that you leave with the odour of cooking meat. I usually have little issue with such a smell, but it truly becomes an olfactory assault when one is trying to wash it out of one’s hair three days later.

Upon arrival, we were quickly ushered to a table and provided with menus. We had barely opened them when a waiter returned with a large stainless steel jug of the chicken soup! There was little resistance when the golden liquid (certainly not to be confused with any other golden liquid) was poured into attractive stoneware bowls, and garnished with heapings of chopped spring onions.

I was relishing the soup and its light gingery aroma so much that I did not even have a close look at the menu. Whoever ordered opted for the set menu- often this is the best way to sample a restaurant’s faire.

The fiery hot coals emerged first, and were lowered into the pit at the centre of the table. The heat was intense, but it came as no surprise having seen how white hot the fuel was.

Then, in quick succession, the plates of meat came out. You can probably identify the wagyu from the ox tongue:

The mixed vegetables, chicken and squid:

As with most Asian barbecue places, everything tastes much the same after a while. We made the mistake of grilling the wagyu first. While this was amazing (the marbling was excellent, and just melted in the mouth), all the other dishes paled in comparison.

Grain fed short rib - this was great, but we were still thinking of the Wagyu…:

However, what was truly bizarre was the serving of the vegetables. Everything came in threes, despite the dinner set being advertised for four. Other than that, Shinbashi was a satisfying meal. Yakiniku is a great option to feed one’s carnivorous cravings, but the chicken soup didn’t make the excess of protein feel quite that bad.

Sorbets were served for dessert- a great palate cleanser.
